Olá Portugal! Elvas, Elvas Presley?

I see London, I see France, I see …. just kidding, but actually I can see the border of Spain from here. Hola!
After exploring Evora yesterday we decided to take today to mosy around Elvas. Elvas is only about a 45 minute drive from Evora, so it’s definitely a super simple last minute decision. Tourists rarely consider visiting as it’s an even less lively town than Evora, but we wanted to soak up as much as possible.
A fun fact about Elvas is that it’s situated on the arid plains of the Portuguese-Spanish border and when it’s viewed from the air the town walls of Elvas form a star. Because Elvas is the natural crossing point between the two countries, it was the first line of defence against any Spanish invasion. Hence the really really freaken high walls, which you can walk freely on.
In my opinion, I’d say if you have the opportunity or are debating the trip out to Elvas, go. Why not, right? It really is a gorgeous little town and it only takes a couple of hours to do the whole circuit. Everything can be done in an afternoon and we even made it back to Evora in time for more shopping.
