Arriving in Malta & Getting to Valletta
Your adventure begins in the capital city, Valletta. There’s no place better to start your trip than right here where the magic happens! From the historic city center to its iconic landmarks, stunning cobblestoned streets and architectural gems, there are so many things to do and see in spectacular Valletta!
Malta International Airport is the ONLY airport in Malta, and it serves the whole of the Maltese Islands! It’s also important to note that because Valletta is compact, pedestrian-friendly and has many preservation efforts, driving a rental car in the city center is actually prohibited. Finding parking nearby, a nightmare.
Although the most convenient way to get anywhere in Malta is to rent a car (I’ll get more into that later) start your trip by Ubering to your city center hotel. Valletta is extremely walkable so you won’t need that rental car until Day 4 anyway! Enjoy Valletta by foot or take Ubers until it’s time to leave the city!
Where to Stay in Valletta
You’ve finally made it to Valletta and what a whirlwind it’s been! So much so that you’ll certainly want a couple of days to amalgamate to the Maltese climate! Opt for 3 days and 3 nights in the city of Valletta to let the beauty of this ancient city sink in! Here are my 3 favourite spots for luxury, mid-range and budget accommodations in Valletta!

Indulge In The Beauty Of The Three Cities
Take the Valletta ferry across the water to the Three Cities! Leaving every so often you can wait for the Cospicua-Valletta Ferry here! It’s pretty straightforward and easily accessible so you should have no problems hopping on and off!
Vittoriosa, Senglea and Cospicua, also known as the Three Cities of Malta, are pieces of living history kept alive by hundreds of years of preservation, and perhaps the occasional miracle. The fortified cities sit like a trio of villages directly across the Grand Harbour from Valletta and are a must see!
Spend a morning or afternoon wandering the streets of these cute and quaint villages!
Checkout Sliema’s Hip & Trendy Seaside Town
If you have even time to spare why not head to the cute and costal town of Sliema! Here you can find colourful apartments rolling down to coves and tidal pools. The dramatic sights that Sliema is offering up is what it’s famous for. This tiny resort town is home to charming Baroque churches, flower-strewn cottages and endless sidewalk cafés.
Sliema has also gathered a reputation for being one of the nightlife and shopping hubs in Malta. Check out Saint Julian’s Bay, Balluta Bay and Spinola Bay if you’re looking for fun cocktail bars and eateries!

Day 8: Day Trip to Comino’s Blue Lagoon
Between Malta and Gozo you’ll find their smaller sister, Comino. A paradise for snorkelers, divers, swimmers and sun lovers, Comino is a great little island to take a day trip to! The island’s main attraction is the infamous Blue Lagoon and in the summer months, this sheltered inlet of shimmering blue water over a white sand beach is a stunning place to dip your toes in!
It’s virtually uninhabited except for a single hotel, so be sure to pack accordingly or opt for a half day!
Getting to Comino & The Blue Lagoon
My pro tip when visiting Comino and the Blue Lagoon is to go very early. I mean very early! I’m talking 6:00AM-ish early or alternatively late in the afternoon when it’s much quieter. This will also allow you to soak up a sunset view as a bonus.
⛵ Local Tour Operators:
Step aboard a boat tour departing from Gozo! We booked a tuk-tuk + boat tour with Yippee! and it was a fantastic day of swimming and sightseeing. Many other operators will also stop for a good amount of time at the Blue Lagoon and will sail around parts of the island for you to see. In the high season, having a spot on a boat is a total plus. Trust me.
You can find these operators in popular tourist areas like Mgarr Harbor in Gozo. Simply visit their offices or book your tour in advance online!
🛥️ Private Charter:
A private boat charter, although the most expensive option, will be sure to give you a more customized experience! Many local companies offer private charters, and you can tailor your itinerary to suit your preferences. This means a lot of flexibility in terms of time and location and also being able to visit other parts of the islands beyond just the Blue Lagoon!
⛴️ Ferries:
There are regular ferry services that run from Mgarr Harbor in Gozo to Comino daily! The schedule may vary depending on the season, so it’s a good idea to check the timetable in advance. These ferries are a more budget-friendly option compared to private boat tours, however you’ll have to find a spot on the shoreline yourself to hangout, which is not as comfortable as being on a boat!

Step Back in Time in Malta’s Silent City

Day 11: Soak in Charming Rabat
Rabat, just outside Mdina, is said to be the birthplace of Maltese Christianity. According to tradition, it was where the Apostle Paul lived after being shipwrecked on the island of Malta, in 60 AD. Today, Rabat’s heritage mainly consists of many Roman ruins and early Christian catacombs and is most famous for St. Paul’s Grotto and the Domvs Romana.
What To Do In Rabat
We’ve already explored the walled city of Mdina so what could we possibly have left to do? Trust me when I say there’s more to explore on the other side of those walls in the city of Rabat. Best Time to Visit Malta
The best time to visit Malta largely depends on your preferences and what you’re looking for in your trip! Malta comes with a Mediterranean climate that means hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Here’s a breakdown of the seasons and what they offer:
🌷Spring (March to May):
Spring is a popular time to visit Malta, as the weather is pleasantly warm but not scorching hot. The countryside is lush and green, and the wildflowers are in bloom! It’s a great time for outdoor activities, such as hiking and exploring historic sites, as the weather is comfortable.
☀️ Summer (June to August):
Summer is the peak tourist season, but in comparison to Italy I would say the crowds here are enjoyable. It is the perfect season with plenty of sunshine and very warm temperatures. It’s an ideal time for beachgoers!
🍂 Autumn (September to November):
Early autumn is also a fantastic time to visit Malta. The weather is still warm, but crowds start to thin out after the summer rush. September, in particular, is often considered one of the best months to visit.
❄️ Winter (December to February):
Winter in Malta is relatively mild compared to many other European destinations. It’s the least crowded and most budget-friendly time to visit. While swimming in the sea may be too chilly for some, there are still cultural events, festivals, and indoor attractions to enjoy. It’s a great time for exploring Malta’s history and museums without the summer heat.
Getting Around Malta
Getting around Malta is relatively easy, as it’s a small island nation with a well-developed transportation system. Here are the main options for getting around Malta:
🚗 By Car: Renting a car is one of the easiest and efficient ways to get around Malta! It also means you are free to explore at your own leisure and aren’t constrained to the operating hours of public transport! We rented a car through Green Motion, one of the most inexpensive car rental companies on the island, it was great!
🚌 By Bus: Malta’s public bus system is an affordable and accessible way to reach many destinations around Malta. You can check the schedules and routes on the Malta Public Transport website or use their mobile app. You can purchase single tickets or a reloadable Explore Card for multiple journeys! Check out Malta’s bus system HERE!
🚕 By Taxi: We all know and love Uber for the sole purpose of getting around the city safely and comfortably! I also recommend downloading Bolt before you go as it’s another very commonly used taxi service that acts just like Uber!
