Marsaxlokk Malta, it’s tiny, it’s quaint, it’s the epitome of traditional Mediterranean island life, but it was by far one of my favourite places in all of Malta. Nestled on the southeastern coast of the island, Marsaxlokk is a captivating destination that offers a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and a vibrant local atmosphere. 

Waking up to views of the harbourfront each morning and watching the traditional Luzzu boats bob up and down while I inhaled my freshly baked croissant was more than a treat! Two days in this beautiful seaside village just frankly wasn’t enough.

Whether you decide to delve into the captivating allure of Marsaxlokk for a couple of nights or just simply take a day-trip down to the harbour from Valletta, keep scrolling to see all the amazing things to eat, see and do in Marsaxlokk!

Marsaxlokk Malta: The Back Story

Marsaxlokk has a fascinating history that dates back to ancient times. Influenced by various civilizations that left their mark on the village, you’ll come face to face with its historical landmarks, including the renowned Marsaxlokk Bay, where the Phoenicians once traded and the Knights of St. John sought refuge.

From the centuries-old windmills to the charming parish church, the village’s past is woven into its present-day charm. Today brightly-coloured traditional fishing boats, Luzzus line the sheltered harbour in a magnificent display. Marsaxlokk is renowned for its authentic fishing village atmosphere, and there’s no better way to immerse yourself in the local culture than by exploring its bustling market and interacting with friendly locals. 

A stroll along the harbour will pave way to traditional fishing techniques as you witness first hand the fishermen’s daily routines and fresh catches. There are so many things to do in Marsaxlokk that capture the essence of this charming fishing village. These 6 activities are sure to provide a taste of the unique experiences Marsaxlokk has to offer. So whether you’re immersing yourself in the local culture, indulging in delicious seafood, or exploring the natural wonders of the area, Marsaxlokk promises a delightful and memorable visit. 1. Explore St. Peter’s Pool

Located nearby, St. Peter’s Pool is a natural swimming pool carved into the rocky coastline. And it’s a MUST! Dive into the crystal-clear turquoise waters, bask in the sun on the smooth limestone rocks, and enjoy a refreshing swim and beer in this secluded and idyllic spot.

2. Visit Marsaxlokk Bay

Just a short drive from Marsaxlokk, but totally worth it is the Blue Grotto. This series of sea caves known for their vibrant blue waters are mesmerizing!  Take a boat tour around the Blue Grotto and admire the combination of the azure sea, towering cliffs, and natural rock formations  that make for a truly captivating experience.

How To Get Around Marsaxlokk

It’s pretty easy to get to Marsaxlokk as it’s a relatively small village close to Valletta and once you’re there the town is super easy to navigate and explore!

🚗 By Car: Renting a car is one of the easiest and efficient ways to get around Malta! It also means you are free to explore at your own leisure and aren’t constrained to the operating hours of public transport! We rented a car through Green Motion, one of the most inexpensive car rental companies on the island, it was great!

🚌 By Bus: Malta’s public bus system is an affordable and accessible way to reach Marsaxlokk. You can check the schedules and routes on the Malta Public Transport website or use their mobile app. Buses from Valletta, such as route 81, regularly connect to Marsaxlokk Check out Malta’s bus system HERE!

👟 By Foot: Marsaxlokk is a compact village so exploring on foot is an enjoyable way to discover its charming streets, harbor and the Sunday Fish Market. Most attractions in the village are within walking distance of each other which gives it that cozy touch.

🚕 By Taxi: We all know and love Uber for the sole purpose of getting around the city safely and comfortably! I also recommend downloading Bolt before you go as it’s another very commonly used taxi service that acts just like Uber!
