Unlock Ottawa: 19 Must-Do Experiences in Canada’s Capital

Welcome to Canada’s beautiful capital, Ottawa! You might think Ottawa is totally a pass, but trust me when I say this city blew my expectations right out of the Rideau Canal.

Located within the traditional Anishinàbeg Algonquin territory, it’s a place where history mingles with its vibrant cultural life, iconic landmarks and hidden gems. From the culinary geniuses dotting the city to the great outdoor adventures enclosing it, here is why you need to uncover these must-do activities that capture the essence of everything Ottawa.

1. Stroll or Skate Down the Rideau Canal

The heart of Ottawa is none other than the Rideau Canal itself! This gorgeous UNESCO World Heritage Site is the perfect place to start your Ottawa journey. There is a well-preserved series of dams and locks, which you can even skate on during the winter. Ottawa also has some beautiful walking paths along the canal that will let you soak in the gorgeous views of our capital!

2. Shop the Local ByWard Market

I’m sure you’ve heard by now, but if you’re wondering what is the ByWard Market is, well its where Ottawa was born! So really, there is no better place to kick off some fun than right here in the thick of it! One of the oldest farmers’ markets in Canada, you’re sure to find some tasty treats at the incredible indoor food vendors, while also strolling through the unique shops and stalls!

3. Scoot Your Life Away on Ottawa’s Electric Scooters 

Whether it’s getting from point A to point B, a quick caffeine stop or just a much needed joyride it’s so worth taking one of Ottawa’s electric scooters for a spin. We rented our e-scooters with Neuron and had the time of our lives flying through the streets! Best way to get to brunch by far!

4. Check out the National Gallery of Canada

Escape to the great indoors at one of the best museums in Ottawa, the National Gallery of Canada. Now this is a gallery you don’t want to miss! They work with artists and art organizations across the country and around the world to share a collective story through art. And it is seriously cool!

5. Grab Brunch at One of These Local Faves

By now we know that Ottawa is full of egg-cellent activities, but you just can’t leave without grabbing brunch at one of these drool-worthy brunch spots. Some of my favourite restaurants in Ottawa for brunch are Jax, Wilf & Ada’s and Chesterfield’s Gastro Diner. Yum!

6. Wander Along Downtown Gatineau’s Culture Trail

Downtown Gatineau is the place to be for tasty microbreweries and restaurants featuring everything from bistros to epicurean fare. You can totally get lost in this cute little Quebec town, which just happens to be over the bridge! Wander along their Culture Trail as it takes you from the Canadian Museum of History tp Brewery Creek. Checkout the Gatineau Culture Trail Map here!

7. Have a Drink at the Fairmont Chateau Laurier 

The Fairmont Chateau Laurier is home to the picturesque La Terrasse. This scenic patio comes fully equipped with views of the Parliament Buildings, the rolling Gatineau Hills and the Ottawa River. With cocktails, sangrias, chilled wines and local beers there is seriously no better way to spend a summer’s afternoon. 

In the winter months, head inside the Fairmont Chateau Laurier to  Zoe’s! This gorgeous bar is rich in history, but young at heart. They serve up excellent handcrafted cocktails, light bites and a captivating bar experience that serves up a side of local history!

8. Checkout the Canadian Museum of History

Canada’s most-visited museum is home to the events, people and objects that have shaped Canada. Come and marvel at the world’s largest indoor collection of totem poles and learn about the traditions and achievements of Canada’s Indigenous nations! There is also the largest and most comprehensive exhibition of Canadian history ever created! Wow!

9. Fill Up on BeaverTails

Who doesn’t love a BeaverTail? Makers of the world famous Canadian pastry, BeaverTails has been around since 1978! And let’s face it, everything tastes better on a BeaverTail.

10. Get Spooked on an Ottawa Ghost Tour

Ottawa is full of ghouly ghost stories, haunted locations and dark histories. From spine tingling ghost tours to heart pounding paranormal investigations hop on one of these awesome tours to see a creepier side of what Ottawa has to offer! Boo! 11. Devour a Tasty Treat at Supply & Demand

What is it? A sleek restaurant focusing on raw bar offerings, vegetarian small plates, meat and fish from local producers and pastas made in-house daily! You definitely want to get your hands on this high-quality surf and turf spot because it’s beyond yummy! This is by far one of the best restaurants in Ottawa, just saying.

For a little extra fun they also offer pasta making classes, where you prep and eat the pasta you make (with wine pairings, of course). You can make a reservation for your Pasta Class here!

12. Gaze Up at Ottawa’s 30-Foot Tall Spider

Louise Bourgeois’s iconic Ottawa spider, Maman, is a 30-foot-tall sculpture crafted out of bronze, marble, and stainless steel. Found right in front of the National Gallery of Canada, Maman, is one of six spiders built by the acclaimed artist who was 95 at the time of its design. This creepy creation is definitely a spot you can’t miss!

13. Dive into Divine Middle Eastern Cuisine at Fairouz Cafe

Feast the night away at Fairouz Cafe. A modern journey through the Middle East this stunning Ottawa restaurant serves up some delicious cuisine! Feast your eyes of their sharing plates like Zaatar Crusted Lamb Sirloin or their Seared Halloumi!

14. Black Squirrel Books & Espresso Bar is a Local Fave that Turns into a Bar

A used book store and café heaven, Black Squirrel is a neighbourhood treat that has hipster vibes written all over it. Browse through the crammed bookshelves or cozy up with a tasty latte during the day. By night, the shop becomes a small concert venue and plays host to book launches and art vernissages, with Ontario beers always on tap. 15. Roam Through the Rideau Hall

The Rideau Hall is the official residence of the Governor General of Canada. This extravagant abode is home to the Queen’s representative in Canada and is open and free to the public. The grounds are a beautiful place for a picnic and a sneaky little Instagram photo (especially near the greenhouse)! Although you’re not allowed photos inside, the staff do offer free tours to see the impressive art and furniture collections. If you do head inside be sure to pay extra attention to the candy-striped Tent Room!

16. Have a Cocktail in the Clouds at Copper Spirits & Sights

This chic indoor-outdoor lounge on top of the Andaz hotel offers cocktails, weekend DJs and unbeatable city views. Copper Spirits & Sights features innovative and seasonal Canadian inspired cuisine and handcrafted cocktails served with the best view of Ottawa’s sky-line. Sip on a classic Canadian Caesar that even comes topped with a quintessential ketchup chip.

17. Learn the Inner Workings of Canada’s Parliament 

Discover history, functions and art of Canada’s Parliament with a free guided tour! Kicking off every day, friendly guides will take you through the Legislative Chambers and historic rooms as long as you book your place in advance! Or if you prefer, explore one of the self-guided options!

18. Museum of Nature by Day, Cool Cocktail Bar by Night

Explore the fascinating science the Museum of Nature has to offer. From fossils to mammals, minerals, birds, plate tectonics, Arctic discovery and more, this historic building makes for a fun afternoon of exploring!

On the last Friday of each month (covid permitting), the Canadian Museum of Nature turns into a classy cocktail bar. Imagine exploring the museum while sipping a cocktail and immersing yourself in a totally cool yet historic experience? Yeah, pretty cool eh!

19. Get Inspired by Ottawa’s Street Art

Around every corner in Canada’s capital, you’re bound to run into some stunning urban street art. Murals, sculptures, miniatures and graffiti can be found across this incredible city!
